Tumor Volume or Biological Response?
Shattering Myths in Prostate Cancer Prognosis
At Biostatech S.L., we continue to drive cutting-edge medical research through advanced data analysis. We are delighted to share the publication of a new national multicenter study in the prestigious journal European Urology Open Science, titled: «PSA Response as a Prognostic Marker in Metastatic Hormone-sensitive Prostate Cancer: Comparison with Tumor Volume (CHAARTED)».
This important work, co-led by PhD candidate Rocío Martínez Corral, Dr. Pedro de Pablos, Dr. Daniel Pérez Fentes, Sergio Antón Fuente, and other co-authors, holds special value for us: our colleague Sergio Antón Fuente carried out the entire statistical component from Biostatech S.L., taking full charge of the analysis.
What Does This Research Contribute?
Until now, the management and prognostic assessment of metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) has largely been guided by baseline tumor volume (the CHAARTED classification). However, this traditional approach only provides a static snapshot of the disease.
This study, conducted on a robust cohort of 777 patients from multiple hospital centers across Spain, demonstrates that evaluating PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) response at 6 months after starting treatment provides significantly more powerful and dynamic prognostic information.
📊 Key Study Data:
- Biological response takes precedence: Failing to achieve a complete PSA response at 6 months reduces progression-free survival time by 63% and overall survival time by 43%. In comparison, the static snapshot of high tumor volume is associated with a 21% reduction in survival time (HR: 0.79).
- A more powerful indicator: The study shows that patients with high tumor burden who achieve an excellent response at 6 months present better long-term prognoses than those with low baseline volume but poor biological response.
Our Statistical Contribution
Working with real-world data requires impeccable analytical treatment. For this project, Sergio designed an advanced analytical framework combining Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariable Cox models with Accelerated Failure Time (AFT) models.
This latter technique was the key to success, as it allowed modeling disease progression times with maximum precision where traditional methods were insufficient to capture the observed effect of the analyzed factors.
We would like to congratulate the entire medical and research team, and especially Sergio for this rigorous work that contributes to a more precise prognostic characterization in precision medicine.
