We are thrilled to announce our collaboration in a study recently published in the prestigious journal <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/mco2.70820\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>MedComm (Wiley)<\/strong><\/a>, titled: <em>\u00abIncreased Brown Adipose Tissue Thermogenesis in Phenylketonuria\u00bb<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The study, led by <strong>Miguel L\u00f3pez P\u00e9rez<\/strong> (CiMUS, University of Santiago de Compostela), delves into the alterations associated with phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare metabolic disease characterized by the inability to process the amino acid phenylalanine (Phe).<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #2980b9; font-size: 16px;\">The Core of the Research<\/h3>\n<p>Although PKU has traditionally been linked to neurological issues and thermal regulation imbalances, the role of brown adipose tissue (BAT)\u2014the \u00abgood fat\u00bb responsible for burning calories to generate heat\u2014remained a mystery.<\/p>\n<p>Using non-invasive infrared thermography and blood tests, the study evaluated the activity of this fat tissue. The results revealed that, despite maintaining normal body temperature (normothermia), PKU patients exhibit a significantly higher temperature in brown fat compared to control subjects.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #f4f7f6; padding: 20px; border-left: 5px solid #2980b9; margin: 20px 0;\">\n<h4 style=\"margin-top: 0; color: #2c3e50;\">\ud83d\udcca The Key Biological Discovery:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A metabolic switch:<\/strong> Statistical analyses helped confirm that this thermal increase is directly related to levels of the hormone FGF21 and thyroid hormones.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unprecedented mechanism:<\/strong> At the molecular level, excess phenylalanine acts as a switch that triggers the release of FGF21. This hormone travels to the brain, inhibits the regulatory protein AMPK in the hypothalamus, and sends a direct signal to turn on thermogenesis in brown fat\u2014a mechanism described here for the first time in the context of PKU.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"color: #2980b9; font-size: 16px;\">Our Statistical Contribution<\/h3>\n<p>Analyzing data from thermal imaging tools combined with hormonal biomarkers requires meticulous methodological control to avoid biases caused by biological factors.<\/p>\n<p>At Biostatech S.L., our scientific director <strong>Mar\u00eda P.
