Biostatech has participated in a recent research project published in the prestigious ICES Journal of Marine Science. The study, led by Georgios Kerametsidis (IEO-CSIC), delves into how maternal and environmental effects influence the larval and settlement traits of the fish Tripterygion delaisi.
📄 “Maternal and environmental effects on the larval and settlement traits of a temperate fish”
The distinguishing feature of this work is the pioneering combination of two approaches: microchemistry and otolith shape analysis. Our advisor, José Luis Otero-Ferrer, provided the key statistical methodology for the analysis and decomposition of the otolith shape.
The research reveals fundamental findings for marine ecology:
- High dispersal: Significant mobility is observed during the early life stages.
- Environmental influence: Spatial units are more strongly conditioned by the environment and diet than by strict genetic or maternal separation.
This work is the result of an international collaboration between the IEO-CSIC, IMEDEA, ULPGC, and Stockholm University, consolidating our specialisation in the scientific sector.
