📃 Biostatech provides advanced shape analysis in an international research study

Biostatech reinforces its commitment to high-level research through the collaboration of our advisor, José Luis Otero-Ferrer, in the recent study published in the journal Scientific Reports (Nature) on the phenotypic variation of the American shad (Alosa sapidissima).

📄 “Phenotypic variation in otolith shape of American shad across eastern North American rivers”

In this study, led by Joana Vasconcelos (IPMA) and Karin Limburg (ESF), our technical contribution from Biostatech focused specifically on the analysis of otolith morphology through wavelet decomposition.

This advanced methodology enabled key milestones in data processing:

  • Noise reduction: filtering irrelevant variations in the otolith contours of more than 1,100 specimens.
  • Signal extraction: capturing robust shape descriptors at different scales, facilitating classification results with a diagnostic accuracy exceeding 90%.

This project highlights the importance of applying sophisticated mathematical tools to transform complex biological data into useful information for marine ecology and conservation.
