Our industrial PhD Julia GarcĂa CurrĂĄs has recently published the article:
đ âExploring Biomarkers in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus versus Normoglycemia Identified through High-Throughput Proteomics: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysisâ
This work integrated the results of 27 individual proteomics studies with the aim of identifying consistent biomarkers for type 2 diabetes (T2D). The studies were selected through a systematic review and the results were integrated using meta-analytical techniques specific to both omics and traditional data.
The most important contributions obtained in this study were:
- Integrated functional characterization: key functions and processes in T2D were found through subgroups of proteins highly shared among the included studies.
- Identification of consistent biomarkers: a total of 10 biomarkers with consistent T2D association results across different studies were detected.
- Accessibility of results: an interactive web tool, metaMarkersT2D, was created to share the results, allowing other researchers to search for their protein of interest in the data from the 27 selected articles.
- Public science: The importance of sharing data and rigorously documenting the design and analysis is reaffirmed, as this is key to being able to reuse and integrate the information generated in individual studies.
This article is the result of the 2022 Industrial Doctorate awarded to Julia, entitled âDiscovery of new biomarkers through state-of-the-art proteomic technologiesâ. The work is being carried out at Biostatech under the co-direction of Francisco Gude, our scientific director MarĂa P. Pata, and UDC professor Guillermo L. Taboada.
Our thanks also go to Raquel Pérez Lois for her collaboration.
Congratulations to everyone on the publication and for your contribution to the field of proteomics.
